Director Zach Cregger is reportedly in early conversations about a potential prequel to his film Weapons.
According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger is discussing the project with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, aiming to create an origin story set within the Weapons universe. The film premiered in theaters worldwide earlier this month and has already garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. It features a star-studded cast, including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Cary Christopher.
The prequel is expected to center on Amy Madigan’s character, Gladys Lilly, who plays a pivotal antagonistic role in the original film. While Weapons unfolds in a non-linear fashion, showcasing various perspectives on an entire classroom’s mysterious disappearance on the same night, it does not delve into Gladys’ viewpoint.
Reports suggest that the prequel will explore her backstory and the circumstances that lead to her dark involvement in the children’s vanishing. Initial drafts of the original Weapons included Gladys’s history, but Cregger ultimately cut it due to time constraints.
Sources from The Hollywood Reporter have indicated that no formal agreements have been made regarding the prequel and that a release timeline is still under discussion. Currently, Cregger has multiple projects lined up, including an upcoming Resident Evil film and an original movie titled Flood.
Most recently, Cregger confirmed that Austin Abrams will lead the Resident Evil adaptation as a new character. He described the film as distinct from Barbarian and Weapons, aiming for a more action-packed experience. “It’s going to be a wild ride with Austin as the star. We share an incredible synergy,” Cregger explained. He also clarified that the plot won’t recapitulate Leon’s story from the games, stating that fans already know that narrative.
