Advocating the inseparable bond between art and life, a major retrospective of Raoul Hausmann (1883–1971), one of the most innovative pioneers of classical modernism, opens at the Berlinische Galerie. Hausmann was not only a Dadaist but also one of the first masters of multimedia art, driven by the goal of exploring the unknown and “always realizing tomorrow.”
This comprehensive exhibition brings Hausmann’s groundbreaking practices—from Dada’s first collage creations to his explorations of body, sound, and space in performative shows—into the context of current discussions through approximately 200 works.
Dada’s Manifesto and Traces of Exile
As a photographer, Hausmann succeeded in merging seeing with touching, while his developed synästhetische Apparaturen (synesthetic apparatuses) explored art’s potential to address all senses. His entire life was a struggle to break bourgeois traditions and challenge established norms.
Among the exhibition’s highlights is one of his most iconic and political works, Der Kunstkritiker (The Art Critic, 1919/20), a satire on critics and societal hypocrisy. The show also includes his late works produced in France after fleeing Nazi Germany, demonstrating that his artistic journey was never interrupted.
This retrospective will be on view at the Berlinische Galerie from November 8, 2025, to March 16, 2026. In an era where AI and performance shape contemporary art, Hausmann’s work—uniting technology, identity, and provocation—offers an unexpected resonance with 21st-century issues.
