The legendary rock band, The Who, has officially kicked off their farewell tour, titled ‘The Song Is Over,’ in Italy, featuring their new drummer. Fans can check out some exciting footage from the event below.
The band announced this farewell tour last May, starting with an intimate series of shows in Italy. This marks the first tour for The Who without longtime drummer Zak Starkey, who was let go shortly before the tour began. Starkey has since claimed that he was asked to mislead fans about the reasons behind his departure, which has drawn criticism from his father, Ringo Starr of The Beatles, directed at Roger Daltrey. In Starkey’s place, Scott Devours, a former drummer for Daltrey’s solo project, will take over for the farewell tour.
The tour kicked off with a special performance at the Anfiteatro Camerini in Piazzola sul Brenta, Italy. During their opening night on July 20, The Who delivered a set filled with classics like “My Generation,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Baba O’Riley.” Notably, they performed “I’ve Had Enough” from their 1978 album Who Are You for the first time in 12 years. Last June, we spoke to Starkey regarding his exit from the band. He cited tension that escalated after a performance at the Royal Albert Hall, where Daltrey publicly criticized him for overplaying during ‘The Song Is Over.’ Despite the conflict, Pete Townshend later stated he saw nothing wrong with the show.
After their Italian stint, The Who will head to North America, starting on August 16 at Florida’s Amerant Bank Arena, concluding with a grand finale at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 28. Special guests such as Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Billy Idol, and ZZ Ward are set to join them on this tour.
There’s currently no information regarding potential performances in the UK or Europe, but Roger Daltrey recently expressed his excitement about receiving a knighthood, calling it a “wonderful honor.”
