The Roles That Made Scarlett Johansson Feel ‘Manipulated’

August 11, 20252 min read

Scarlett Johansson has had a remarkable career, starting in Hollywood as a child and eventually becoming one of the highest-grossing actors of all time. While many see the industry as glamorous, her early experiences revealed a much darker side, particularly for young actors stepping into a complicated adult world. This environment often exploits its youth, especially young girls, who may face significant challenges to their self-esteem and confidence.

Some actors, like Zendaya, manage to successfully transition from one stage of their careers to another, thriving in both Disney and more serious film roles. However, Johansson has shared that her early projects shaped her views on herself and her sexuality in complex ways.

She rose to fame with standout roles in movies like Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, quickly becoming known as a Hollywood sex symbol. Often cast in hyper-sexualized roles, Johansson grappled with the labels placed upon her. Reflecting on her career, she remarked, “After doing Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, I was 18 or 19, just coming into my own womanhood, understanding my desirability and sexuality. It felt like I was being groomed to fit the ‘bombshell’ mold. I found myself typecast as the other woman or the object of desire, and it was a corner I couldn’t escape.”

Johansson acknowledged the pressure of fitting this narrow stereotype, noting, “It would be easy to think, ‘This is working,’ but being a bombshell can be fleeting. It burns bright and quick, leaving few opportunities beyond that initial success. It was a puzzling situation, but I focused on seeking diverse projects and working with talented ensembles.”

This restrictive labeling can severely limit an actor’s opportunities and creative pursuits. Striving for more, Johansson broke free from typecasting by taking on bold roles in gritty films like Under the Skin and reprising her character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow.

These stereotypes can be particularly damaging, especially when faced from a young age. Hollywood can be a challenging environment for self-discovery, yet Johansson has managed to navigate it thoughtfully, seeking roles that truly reflect who she is.
