Sutara Gayle’s Acclaimed Production, The Legends of Them, Announces UK Tour

August 22, 20251 min read

Hackney Showroom and writer-performer Sutara Gayle are excited to reveal a comprehensive regional tour of the award-winning show The Legends of Them. Directed by Jo McInnes, this production marks the 40th anniversary of the Brixton Uprising and will travel across England.

The tour kicks off at Birmingham Rep on October 3 and 4, followed by stops at HOME Manchester, Bristol Old Vic, Leeds Playhouse, and Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. It will wrap up at Brighton Dome on November 28 and 29. This tour comes on the heels of the show’s critically acclaimed performances at Brixton House and the Royal Court Theatre, where it earned an OFFIE award for Best Performance Piece.

The Legends of Them is a deeply emotional and personal narrative that tells Sutara Gayle’s remarkable story. Once a pioneering female deejay in London’s 1980s reggae scene known as Lorna Gee, Gayle shared the stage with iconic sound systems. The production also addresses a defining moment in her life: the 1985 police shooting of her sister, Cherry Groce, which incited the second Brixton Uprising, providing a significant socio-political context for the performance.

This show transcends traditional theatre, offering a distinctive blend of high-energy musical performances, spiritual insights, and a dynamic portrayal of multiple characters from Gayle’s past.

Nina Lyndon, co-founder of Hackney Showroom, expressed her enthusiasm saying, “We are thrilled to share The Legends of Them with audiences nationwide,” highlighting Gayle as an “extraordinary artist with a unique gift.”
