Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which reimagines the classic Star Trek universe with a modern narrative, returns for its third season on Paramount+. This season, the USS Enterprise’s cool-headed pilot, Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), steps into the spotlight with more screen time.
Despite the show’s seasons being limited to just 10 episodes, the production team continues to deepen each character’s arc. Ortegas, who captured fans’ attention in the first season, also caught the writers’ notice. Co-producer Henry Alonso Myers previously expressed regret over not giving the character more space. Thanks to this candid feedback and strong fan support, Ortegas became more prominent in Season 2. However, according to Navia, fans were quick to say, “It’s still not enough!”
In a press conference, Melissa Navia commented on the situation:
“Our producers have been saying from the start, ‘We want to write more for Ortegas.’ The fan response after Season 1 was incredible. I had more scenes in Season 2, but fans were still saying, ‘Not enough!’ Now, with Season 3, this interaction has naturally evolved.”
The new season not only highlights Ortegas but also offers more development for characters like Dr. M’Benga, La’an Noonien-Singh, and the new character Roger Korby. Pushing the boundaries of modern sci-fi storytelling, the series continues to embody the classic Star Trek spirit by focusing on character growth and ethical dilemmas.
The Season 3 premiere of Strange New Worlds is now streaming on Paramount+.
