May 21, 20252 min read

Production images have just been released for Matthew Bourne’s critically acclaimed The Midnight Bell, which premiered at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham on May 15. This marks the beginning of a 17-week national tour, including performances at Sadler’s Wells from June 10 to June 21, 2025.

The cast comprises fourteen of New Adventures’ most talented actor-dancers: Cordelia Braithwaite, Reece Causton, Glenn Graham, Daisy May Kemp, Hannah Kremer, Michela Meazza, Andy Monaghan, Liam Mower, Dominic North, Bryony Pennington, Edwin Ray, Danny Reubens, Ashley Shaw, and Alan Vincent. Collectively, they have spent nearly 30 years earning critical acclaim in leading roles across Matthew Bourne’s diverse repertoire, both in the UK and internationally.

Set in 1930s London, The Midnight Bell invites audiences to step into the lives of ordinary people who escape their modest boarding houses each night, pouring their passions, hopes, and dreams into the bustling pubs and fog-laden streets of Soho and Fitzrovia. The story revolves around a particular tavern where a unique group of lonely hearts gathers to navigate their bittersweet romantic entanglements filled with longing, frustration, betrayal, and redemption.

Inspired by the works of renowned English novelist Patrick Hamilton—author of Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky and Hangover SquareThe Midnight Bell captures the essence of everyday life through authentic storytelling rooted in countless interactions within London’s pubs.

Premiering to rave reviews in 2021, the production garnered five nominations at the 2022 National Dance Awards, with Matthew Bourne receiving the award for Best Modern Choreography, while Michela Meazza was honored for Outstanding Female Modern Performance.

Bourne collaborates once again with a talented team that includes Olivier and Tony Award winners: Terry Davies (music), Lez Brotherston (set and costume design), Paule Constable (lighting design), and Paul Groothuis (sound design).
