The darkest case of 1992 is back on screen decades later.
A morning walk on Wimbledon Common turned out to be the end for Rachel Nickell. Her two-year-old son, Alex, who was right beside her, witnessed his mother being murdered that day. Netflix’s three-part series The Witness re-examines this tragic reality through the perspective of the victim’s family; it tells the story not of the police investigation, but of how a father and son rose back up from total devastation.
Jordan Bolger portrays André Hanscombe, carrying paternal love and helplessness at the exact same time. Leaving Britain behind with young Alex, André tries to escape both the voracious greed of the media and a police force that completely botched the investigation. The dimensions of this failure come to light in the series’ most shattering scene: had they acted more carefully, Rachel might still be alive today.
The real André and Alex contributed to the production as consultants. This adds both authenticity and weight to the series. While critics highlight Jordan Bolger’s performance, some also note that the series ignores the story of Colin Stagg, who was wrongfully accused. The Witness arrives accompanied by a documentary released on the same day; I highly recommend watching both together.
