Motion Pictures: Sean Downey’s Emotional Portrait of Time in Boston

November 14, 20251 min read

Artist Sean Downey invites us with his new solo exhibition “Motion Pictures” at LaMontagne Gallery, Boston, to explore how time creates an emotion within our bodies. Downey’s works use images and forms as proxies for the feeling we have about time.

Downey’s paintings and sculptures exist in a space where political, cultural, historical, and autobiographical distinctions become fluid. Although the works appear as if telling a story, their true aim is to evoke a sensation that embraces contradiction. These contradictions form the core of Downey’s artistic language:

Animals Take Center Stage: Instead of ordinary human figures, animals appear as protagonists.

Stillness Is Motion: Stasis replaces movement.

Trapped in Time: Time is captured and fixed within the body of the work.

The artist’s paintings and sculptures function on one hand like film frames suspended in another place and now, while on the other hand they remain firmly tied to the here and now through traces that emphasize the handmade quality and gestures of the works. By building a bridge between image and object, Downey wants the viewer to become part of this emotional tension.
