Koestler Arts: Cracking the Code – “Night Owls and Abstractions” and the Resistance of Creativity

December 3, 20252 min read

How does art flourish even in the harshest places?** Koestler Arts answers this question with its exhibition Night Owls and Abstractions, featuring works from the annual competition that showcases the talents and creativity of people in the UK criminal justice system. Curated by poet and playwright Inua Ellams, the exhibition is on display for free at the Spirit Level (Level 1) of the Royal Festival Hall until 14 December 2025.

From over 7,500 entries submitted to the competition, Ellams selected around 200 works. His aim was to challenge preconceptions about what art produced in secure environments “should” look like: in this selection, humour and vibrant colour sit alongside sorrow and monochrome designs. The exhibition also gives significant space to a variety of textile works that underline how vital softness and tenderness remain, even in the toughest circumstances.

Night Owls: Those Who Look Outward

Ellams was particularly struck during curation by the recurring motif of owls (night birds). For him, these nocturnal creatures symbolise being behind bars – looking outward, reflecting, and often finding clarity only when night falls.

Content warning: Some works contain references to violence, drug use and strong language.

Solidarity and Memory

One of the exhibition’s most powerful elements is the offer of free guided tours led by people who have direct lived experience of the criminal justice system. These guides share firsthand how vital art and creativity are for those inside. Tours take place on Wednesday and Friday evenings and weekend afternoons.

Night Owls and Abstractions is a moving collective act of remembrance that proves art is not punishment – it is a tool for liberation and transformation.
