“Justin Hawkins on the Importance of Criticism in Music Culture”

September 21, 20253 min read

In a recent discussion, Justin Hawkins from The Darkness addressed the backlash he received for his remarks about Yungblud. He stated, “We can’t live in a culture where criticism isn’t allowed.”

Hawkins’ comments came after Yungblud, whose real name is Dominic Harrison, collaborated with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry to pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne during the 2025 VMAs in Long Island, New York, on September 7. While the performance left some, like Ariana Grande, impressed, it earned a less favorable reaction from Hawkins’ brother Dan, who referred to it as “nauseating” and “another nail in the coffin of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Justin then elaborated on his brother’s thoughts, suggesting many older musicians are frustrated by Yungblud’s rise. He described Yungblud’s presentation as akin to “a TV personality doing rock,” and noted it felt more like posturing than authentic artistry.

In response to the divided opinions sparked by his remarks, Justin took to his YouTube channel, Justin Hawkins Rides Again, to clarify his perspective. He read a viewer’s comment expressing frustration over people criticizing Yungblud for honoring Ozzy, emphasizing the negativity that seems to pervade public discourse.

Hawkins clarified that his critique wasn’t a personal attack on Yungblud but rather an opinion about the performance style. “I don’t think I criticized Yungblud’s spirit,” he remarked. “I admire that as much as anyone else. What I was saying is that it comes off as a bit cringe.”

He further expressed the necessity of criticism in the creative world, recalling times when he faced backlash for his own work. “We can’t live in a culture where criticism is not allowed. When I’ve done embarrassing things, I’ve appreciated being called out. It’s part of becoming a better artist.”

Addressing accusations of being “petty” or “bitter,” Hawkins defended his right to express his views, stating that like Yungblud, he too has faced criticism throughout his career. “Someone like Yungblud should be resilient enough to handle a little critique, especially with his large following and successful albums,” he added. He also mentioned that while he supports new talent, he hasn’t yet found Yungblud’s songs to be strong.

The VMAs tribute was a significant moment for Yungblud, following heartfelt gestures he made towards Ozzy, including performing ‘Changes’ at Black Sabbath’s farewell show. After the VMAs, Yungblud and Aerosmith announced a new single, “My Only Angel,” set to release on September 19, as part of their upcoming EP.

Meanwhile, The Darkness continues its North American tour, promoting their latest album, Dreams On Toast. Justin Hawkins has also announced a solo tour for his podcast, scheduled for next year.
