Being part of a Star Trek series is more than just stepping into sci-fi for the cast and crew; it means becoming a living piece of a mythology. Jonathan Frakes, one of the key bearers of this legacy, returns to the director’s chair in Strange New Worlds Season 3, shaping character dynamics with a simple yet powerful directive on set.
Tension Between Pike and Number One? “Not Romantic, but Friendly”
In the episodes directed by Frakes, every scene between Una Chin-Riley (Number One), played by Rebecca Romijn, and Captain Christopher Pike, portrayed by Anson Mount, begins with the same phrase:
“Olddddd friends.”
According to Romijn at a press conference, this phrase has become Frakes’ go-to mantra, setting the emotional tone for the scenes. It provides the actors with clear guidance to reflect the deep history of their characters’ friendship.
Fans May Be Disappointed: Not Love, but Trust
While many viewers have hoped for a romantic connection between Pike and Una, Frakes’ approach is unequivocal. Romijn explains that the characters share a “very old friendship,” likely dating back to their Starfleet Academy days, built on years of mutual admiration and trust.
This friendship often appears in the series as a bond stronger than Pike’s romantic relationships. In Season 3, alongside Pike’s relationship with Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano), his platonic solidarity with Una creates a uniquely authentic dynamic.
Frakes’ Directorial Touch
Jonathan Frakes contributes to the Strange New Worlds universe not only as an actor but also as an experienced director. Having previously directed the acclaimed “Lower Decks” crossover episode in Season 2, Frakes continues to shape the narrative in this season. His “Old friends” emphasis influences not only the dialogue but also the characters’ gestures and glances, becoming a defining tone for the scenes.
