Garbage, one of music history’s most influential bands, has released their new track “There’s No Future In Optimism.” The song, featured on their highly anticipated album Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, blends Garbage’s signature electronic-infused alternative rock sound. Described as a melancholic yet hopeful political anthem, “There’s No Future In Optimism” carries a powerful message. Lead singer Shirley Manson shares, “I love the title. But the lyrics are an act against that title. Because if we truly let our fatalism or negativity take over, we fall apart.
It’s about a city, in my case Los Angeles, but it could be anywhere where bad things happen. After the murder of George Floyd—one of the few things in my life I wish I’d never seen—watching the footage of a police officer kneeling on his neck changed me completely. In the aftermath, Los Angeles saw massive protests and unrest. Helicopters hovered over our Hollywood home for days. It was dangerous, chaotic, and terrifying.”
