Theatr Clwyd is alive with anticipation following the cast reveal for the world premiere of Chris Ashworth-Bennion’s debut play, “The Red Rogue of Bala.” Set to run from November 3 to 22, this eagerly awaited darkly comic drama explores themes of power, community, and change against the unsettling backdrop of an impending war.
Directed by Dan Jones, the Artistic Director of Cardiff’s renowned The Other Room, the play draws inspiration from the local legend of Coch Bach y Bala, a notorious figure known for jailbreaking, poaching, and thieving.
In the lead role of Coch Bach y Bala is Simon Holland Roberts, celebrated for his work on “Coronation Street” as well as his stage performances at the Donmar Warehouse and National Theatre Wales.
The impressive cast features a wealth of Welsh talent, including Maxine Evans, known for her roles in “Stella,” “Call the Midwife,” and “Torchwood.” Joining her is Anglesey native Julian Lewis Jones, recognized for his performances in HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” “Justice League,” and “Invictus.”
Additional cast members include Rhys Ap Trefor (“Pobol y Cwm,” “Hinterland”), Wyn Bowen Harries (“Rownd a Rownd,” “Coronation Street”), Theo Woolford (“Dial M For Mayhem,” “Alan Partridge”), and Mia Khan (“Mammoth,” “The Motive and the Cue”). Making his professional Welsh stage debut is Geraint De Carvalho, a recent graduate from East 15 Acting School. Completing the ensemble is Qasim Mahmood, who brings a strong theatre background from the RSC and Hampstead Theatre.
With its captivating narrative, talented cast, and esteemed creative team, “The Red Rogue of Bala” promises to be a landmark theatrical experience at Theatr Clwyd this autumn. Tickets are available now at theatrclwyd.com.
