Ellen DeGeneres has announced her permanent relocation to the UK, attributing the decision to Donald Trump’s re-election.
Last year, reports emerged that the comedian and talk show host had moved to England with her wife, Portia de Rossi, after the former Republican president returned to the White House.
During a recent appearance in Cheltenham (as reported by BBC News), DeGeneres confirmed that the speculation surrounding their move was true. Initially, the couple planned to spend only part of each year in the UK after purchasing a home in the Cotswolds.
Reflecting on the moment they arrived just before the election, DeGeneres recalled, “We woke up to a flood of texts from friends sending crying emojis. I knew he had won, and we decided right then, ‘We’re staying here.’”
In the same conversation, she revealed that she and de Rossi are contemplating remarrying in the UK due to concerning developments in the US surrounding the potential reversal of same-sex marriage rights. “The Baptist Church in America is attempting to roll back gay marriage,” she stated. “If they succeed, we plan to get married here.”
After hosting her talk show in the US until its conclusion in 2022—following allegations of a “toxic work environment”—DeGeneres acknowledged the backlash she received around that time. She explained, “No matter what I said, the narrative turned to ‘She’s mean’. I struggled to address this without coming across as a victim. I’m just a straightforward person, and sometimes that gets interpreted as ‘mean’.”
DeGeneres reflected on the societal perception of female behavior, emphasizing, “It’s astonishing that labeling someone as mean is often the worst critique against a woman. Why must we always be perceived as kind and submissive?”
While she expressed her frustration at being seen through that lens, DeGeneres affirmed, “I despise it. I know who I am: an empathetic and compassionate person.”
