Coldplay Revives ‘Speed Of Sound’ Live for the First Time Since 2016

June 19, 20253 min read

Coldplay has taken the stage to perform ‘Speed Of Sound’ in its entirety for the first time since 2016. You can catch the full performance below.

Currently, the British band is in the midst of their North American leg of the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, which began earlier this May. For ticket information, click here.

On June 14, during a stop in El Paso, Texas, Coldplay surprised fans with a full rendition of ‘Speed Of Sound.’ Originally released as the lead single from their 2005 album ‘X&Y’, the track marked their first downloadable Number One hit and their first Top 10 entry in the U.S.

Despite its past success, frontman Chris Martin has been hesitant to perform the song live, stating, “we never got it right.” Although it has occasionally been played acoustically or in parts, this performance marks the first complete rendition in nearly a decade.

Martin shared with the crowd that while in El Paso, the band decided, “Why don’t we try and reclaim the song ‘Speed of Sound’? At some point, we’ll do a proper edit of the song.” He expressed a desire to make it “a little bit quicker, a little bit shorter, a little bit tighter,” before launching into the performance.

In August, Coldplay will also play an impressive series of stadium shows, taking up residency at Hull’s Craven Park Stadium and London’s Wembley Stadium.

This marks a continuation of their record-breaking ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, which has recently become the highest-grossing rock tour of all time, amassing $945.7 million and selling 8.8 million tickets since its launch in March 2022. The tour has been noted for “setting a new standard” in eco-friendly live music.

Moreover, 10% of the band’s proceeds from these shows will be donated to the Music Venue Trust, supporting grassroots music venues in the UK and fostering the growth of emerging artists.

In other news, we recently spoke with Chris Martin about their upcoming 10th album, ‘Moon Music.’ He confirmed that while the band originally planned to retire after 12 albums, they have reassessed their timeline, mentioning, “It is 12 albums for sure, but we’re going to be a bit later than that. There’s one more thing, which is a musical.”

Martin revealed that the last ‘single’ will be from the album titled ‘All My Love’, and after that, there will be a final album simply named ‘Coldplay,’ expected to be released a year later than planned.
