Can Carmen be Saved? Gorky’s Attempt to Rewrite Opera History

April 22, 20251 min read

Neighbor, would you like me to read the news to you?

A new production at the Gorky Theater revisits Georges Bizet’s famous opera “Carmen” from a perspective that questions its racist and sexist themes. This opera is often recognized for its narrative of a bad woman leading to the downfall of a good man, but is there a valid reason for the reproduction of this work? Is it the beautiful music, or the work’s huge place in popular culture?

Artists Lindy Larsson and Riah Knight, led by director Christian Weise, take a stand against the death of Carmen and, with this performance, point to a different future for opera. Questioning the 19th century’s outdated assumptions, this bold step suggests an important transformation in the world of theater. This production will be staged at the Maxim Gorki Theater on April 8-10 and will be presented in German with German supertitles.
