Andrew Lloyd Webber Lauds Watermill Theatre’s Acclaimed Production of Jesus Christ Superstar

July 22, 20252 min read

Recently, the Watermill Theatre welcomed the renowned Andrew Lloyd Webber, who attended their acclaimed production of Jesus Christ Superstar, featuring actor-musicians. Joint CEOs Paul Hart, the Artistic Director, and Claire Murray, the Executive Director, expressed their excitement at having the iconic composer visit their cozy venue in Newbury.

The production is currently running an extended summer season until Sunday, September 21st, and has received a remarkable array of four- and five-star reviews. Its popularity is reflected in ticket sales, with over two-thirds of tickets already sold just two weeks into performances. This puts Jesus Christ Superstar on track to become the Watermill Theatre’s fastest-selling production, attracting audiences from around the world, including Australia, Japan, Singapore, and the USA.

After the show, Lloyd Webber took the time to mingle with the cast and crew, reminiscing about his enduring connection to the Watermill, which began with its transformation by David Gollins. He commended the team, stating, “Congratulations to the wonderful company of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Watermill Theatre. I wish you all the best for the rest of your run.”

Claire Murray emphasized the importance of this production for the theatre’s sustainability as an independent charity. “Staging Sir Tim Rice and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic rock opera in our 200-seat theatre and gardens is a significant achievement,” she noted, expressing her delight at the strong audience turnout for this “fantastic, immersive experience.”

The cast features 18 talented performers, including six recent graduates from musical theatre programs, thanks to funding from Greenham Trust. These emerging artists will lead free workshops, participate in cast Q&As, and provide behind-the-scenes insights to engage local young people in arts careers. Additionally, subsidized £15 tickets are available for those aged 16-30 through the Watermill’s “16-30: Beginners” scheme.

Tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar can be booked online at watermill.org.uk.
