In a recent episode of her podcast, Good Hang, Amy Poehler voiced her frustration with the Oscars for consistently overlooking comedic films. The episode featured actress Olivia Colman, who is currently promoting her new comedy, The Roses, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. The film revolves around a seemingly perfect couple whose hidden resentments surface as their careers diverge.
During the podcast, Cumberbatch chimed in, asserting, “If you can do comedy, you can do anything. I genuinely believe that.” Poehler responded, “Absolutely! Every year at the Oscars, it’s the same story—serious films sweep the awards while comedies are left out. It’s just ridiculous! Comedy is tough, and I have to say, both you and Olivia excel at it.”
Poehler, known for her roles in iconic comedy shows like Saturday Night Live and her work as a producer, has earned one Emmy Award from 28 nominations in her career.
While Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, recently stood out as one of the few comedies to receive accolades, it also sparked controversy when neither Gerwig nor lead actress Margot Robbie received nominations.
The nominations for the 2026 Oscars, set for March 15, have yet to be announced, but discussions are currently dominated by dramatic films like Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia.
In the past, Poehler has remarked on the silver lining of being snubbed at award shows, noting that it often leads to people expressing their appreciation for your work.
Colman and Cumberbatch’s The Roses is currently in theaters, and previous podcast guests include notable names like Selena Gomez and Seth Meyers.
