A Powerful Collaboration in the Art World: Esmaa Mohamoud Now Joins Forces with Roberts Projects!

We have another inspiring piece of news from the art world! Roberts Projects has announced with great excitement that it now represents the striking contemporary artist Esmaa Mohamoud. In fact, we had already received the first signals of this beautiful collaboration with the gallery’s memorable first solo exhibition with the artist in 2025, titled What Does Webster’s Say About Soul?

Esmaa Mohamoud’s art is known for taking familiar objects and symbols from Black visual culture — such as football equipment, magnificent peacock chairs, ‘lowrider’ cars, butterflies and shea butter — and infusing them with an entirely new spirit. By playing with the scale of these familiar objects and layering cultural references, the artist essentially recreates their accustomed meanings from scratch. These works, which rest on serious research and great meticulous craftsmanship, reveal not only masterful use of materials but also the profound symbolic power they carry. Mohamoud reads Black history precisely through this material culture and succeeds in dismantling monolithic, stereotypical racial clichés, opening the door to a world full of complex, rich and highly diverse experiences.

With her critical perspective on Black body politics, the artist invites us all to reflect by questioning how people strive to exist in spaces where they are already objectified and racialised. While producing works that unravel the mystery of society’s unwritten, silent rules, she simultaneously celebrates long-established traditions of resistance and resilience, reshaping this visual language in her own style.

Born in Canada in 1992 and now living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Mohamoud is a remarkable conceptual artist standing at the exact intersection of sculpture and installation. By skilfully using materials that carry both personal and historical weight, she transforms the legacy of the past and the possibilities of future renewal into metaphorically incredibly rich works.
