Over the first bank holiday weekend of May, more than 100 boats will gather in Little Venice to celebrate London’s historic waterways.
The traditional IWA Canalway Cavalcade, held annually on the same weekend, hosts a remarkably colorful fleet ranging from historic vessels and residential narrowboats to cruisers and wide beams. Most of the boats, gathered around the “Pool of Little Venice” just behind Paddington Station, are adorned with vibrant flags and bunting. Accompanied by live performances, the festival spirit reaches every corner of the district.
For those who aren’t mariners or don’t own a boat, there is a packed program on land as well. Throughout the weekend, non-stop live music performances are accompanied by delicious street food, bars serving refreshing drinks, and market stalls selling everything from handicrafts to canal-themed clothing. Furthermore, with plenty of activities to keep children entertained, the festival offers a perfect environment for a pleasant family day out.
The true feast on the canal begins with the daytime processions of meticulously decorated boats. However, the most enchanting moment of the event by far is the Illuminated Boat Parade, taking place on Sunday evening at 9:00 PM. You can think of this visual spectacle—where boat owners showcase their creativity by lighting up their vessels—as an “early Christmas celebration on the canal in May.”
In short, if you are looking for a free, lively, and visual feast to enjoy with your family over the first long weekend of May, set your course for Little Venice for one of London’s most iconic annual events.
