20th Earth Hour Protests

London is once again preparing for a silent and dark global protest in March 2026. Organized by WWF and taking place for the 20th time this year, Earth Hour will transform the city’s iconic skyline into an unusual sight.

Mark your calendars for this massive event, when millions of people around the world switch off their lights to show their commitment to the planet:

Date: Saturday, 28 March 2026

Time: 20:30 – 21:30 (local time)

Iconic Landmarks That Will Go Dark

London’s most famous buildings will keep only essential safety lighting on during this one-hour period. Based on previous years, the following landmarks are expected to participate by turning off their decorative lights:

  • Tower Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral: A magnificent silence along the river.
  • The Gherkin and BT Tower: A pause in the sky’s light show.
  • Harrods and Piccadilly Circus: An unusual dimness in the city’s most glittering spots.
  • Royal Opera House and Barbican: A dark meditation at the heart of culture.

Small Note: Street lights will remain on for safety reasons, so London will never be plunged into total darkness. However, the reduction of the city’s famous “orange and white” glow will create unique opportunities for photographers.

This year, WWF aims to go beyond the symbolic act of switching off lights. They are inviting volunteers to do something positive for the planet during those 60 minutes. Here are some suggestions for things you can do in London:

  • Connect with Nature: Plant a tree or join a litter-picking event in a local park.
  • Sustainable Dinner: Enjoy a candlelit meal made entirely from sustainable ingredients with the lights off.
  • Digital Detox: Spend the hour screen-free, listening to the sounds of nature or simply gazing at the sky.

Important Reminder: Clocks Go Forward!

Good news for those who find the darkness too long: it won’t last! On the night connecting 28 March to 29 March — just a few hours after Earth Hour ends — the United Kingdom will move the clocks forward one hour at 01:00. With the switch to daylight saving time, the days will start getting brighter.

Do You Have Plans for Earth Hour?

Watching the city’s lights go out one by one from one of London’s viewpoints — such as Primrose Hill or Greenwich Park — can be a truly powerful experience.
