How much depth can art pour into a single surface? Brazilian artist Gabriela Giroletti poses exactly that question in her fourth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, Berlin. Titled Among ripples and folds, the exhibition presents brand-new works on warped, contorted panels that summon crystal facets, stone textures, and bodily processes. Energy transfer and elemental motion shimmer across iridescent, opalescent forms.
Giroletti’s making is a masterclass in controlled instinct. She now begins each painting by sculpting the support itself—sawing and sanding wood into the desired curve. That shaped cradle becomes a vessel: once primed, her gestures flow faster, forms bloom organically. The thick black contours she drags across every piece function like handwriting—her signature, a visual compass, steering the eye through shifting atmospheres and emotional currents.
Her palette has undergone a quiet revolution. Earthy, subterranean tones have given way to the radiant, light-drenched hues that dominate this show. A trip back to Brazil, a re-tuned studio, and a growing obsession with light itself are credited for the shift. The title itself is an incantation: something hidden yet enchanted, the push-pull between contraction and expansion. Inwardly folding, outwardly rippling—endlessly. Giroletti doesn’t just want us to look; she wants us to fall inside the forms and feel them pulse against our own skin.
