Displayed on the exterior of Autograph’s building in London’s Shoreditch, Eileen Perrier: Twenty-Two offers an intimate visual meditation on youth, growth, transformation, and the search for identity. Commissioned by Autograph, this new project weaves a narrative that is both personal and intergenerational.
Perrier presents portraits of her son and his friends, spanning past to present, alongside pinhole camera photographs taken in London. This dual-layered approach reflects both the city’s evolution and the emotional shifts of young individuals navigating maturity. Accompanying the visuals are short texts where the young subjects, in their own words, express the complexities, anxieties, joys, and uncertainties of growing up.
“I used to think adults had everything figured out. Now I realize no one really does — they’ve just been trying for a bit longer.” — Words from a portrait subject
This open-air exhibition is conceived as an extension of Perrier’s career-spanning retrospective, A Thousand Small Stories. Both projects align with Autograph’s ongoing mission to document and amplify the legacy of Black women photographers.
