Poppy Unleashes Powerful Cover of Wham!’s Classic ‘Last Christmas’ with Jordan Fish

October 16, 20252 min read

Poppy has released a bold new cover of Wham!’s holiday favorite, “Last Christmas,” on October 15. The fresh rendition, produced by Jordan Fish, is available below for your listening pleasure.

Performed during a Spotify session, Fish, a former member of Bring Me The Horizon, praised the cover as a “banger,” exclaiming, “Christmas came early!”

This version of the 1984 classic is infused with heavy guitar riffs and features emotionally charged, stripped-back harmonies towards the end. Check it out:

Poppy collaborated with Fish on her sixth album, Negative Spaces. She emphasized their mutual love for heavy and sugary pop music, noting that these shared tastes created a strong connection on the record.

Fish previously discussed his work with Poppy on Negative Spaces, describing the challenge of crafting a cohesive body of work from her genre-defying style. “She wanted big rock songs, and that’s something I can do. It was a painless process since she doesn’t stress much about her creations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wham! celebrated a historic return to the UK Christmas Number One spot in 2024, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of “Last Christmas.” Written and produced by the late George Michael, the beloved track originally aimed for the top spot back in 1984 but was narrowly edged out by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” It wasn’t until 2023 that “Last Christmas” finally clinched its long-awaited Number One.

In 2024, Wham! made history again by securing the Christmas Number One for the second consecutive year. Andrew Ridgeley commented on this remarkable achievement: “It took 37 years to reach Number One, and 39 for the Christmas Number One. Now, they come like London buses! I know George would be thrilled to see his timeless Christmas song celebrated in this way.”

With this achievement, Wham! joins iconic groups like Queen, the Spice Girls, and The Beatles as one of the few acts to achieve multiple Official Christmas Number One titles.
