Some artists don’t just make music—they rewrite the history of an instrument. Brandee Younger is one such visionary. Redefining the harp’s place in modern music, Younger will perform at the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival on Saturday, October 11, at Zorlu PSM’s Turkcell Platinum Stage.
Over the past 15 years, Younger has shattered all boundaries and limitations placed on harpists. In 2022, she became the first Black woman nominated for a Grammy in Best Instrumental Composition. That same year, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. In 2024, she clinched the Best Jazz Album award for Brand New Life, cementing her legacy. Beyond being a musician, Younger is an academic, infusing her music with a deep sense of heritage and respect.
Her upcoming third album, Gadabout Season, is particularly special, recorded in her own home using the restored harp of legendary harpist Alice Coltrane—a meaningful gesture, like one generation passing its legacy to the next. As The New York Times noted, “No harpist has ever combined the modern harp traditions from Salzedo to Dorothy Ashby to Alice Coltrane with such power, grace, and devotion.”
For this special evening, Younger will be joined by bassist Rashaan Carter and drummer Allan Mednard. This concert is not just a performance but a rare opportunity to witness the vision of an artist shaping the future of music.
