October brings a collision of cinema’s timeless gems and today’s boldest stories. MUBI’s October lineup opens doors for every viewer, from restored masterpieces to fresh festival darlings, reigniting our passion for film.
This month, a special retrospective celebrates Turkish cinema master Reha Erdem’s cinematic legacy. From the restored A Ay to films like Life Exists, Five Times, and Cosmos, this selection invites us to rediscover Erdem’s existential questions, his exploration of nature and human connections, and the poetry hidden in everyday life.
International festival standouts also shine on MUBI. Three Kilometers to the End of the World, which premiered at Cannes and won the Queer Palm, tells the story of a gay teen’s self-discovery in a conservative village. Nehir Tuna’s debut feature Yurt, winner of Best Screenplay at Venice, offers a coming-of-age tale amidst personal and societal pressures.
Classic cinema legends aren’t forgotten. The BAFTA-winning Billy Elliot delivers an inspiring story of a boy chasing his dreams, while Akira Kurosawa’s epic Ran transports viewers to the grandeur and brutality of feudal Japan. For crime thriller fans, Michael Mann’s iconic, stylized Manhunter dives into psychological games.
MUBI also spotlights local cinema. Aybüke Avcı’s documentary Tomato, Pepper, Depression, set in Adana’s Çetirevli village, tackles depression with humor and sincerity, standing out as one of the lineup’s most original works. Plus, three short films from the 4th Kaş International Film Festival offer a chance to discover new voices in Turkish cinema.
October’s lineup opens new worlds with every film. Where do you think you’ll start watching on MUBI this month?
