Galerie Nagel Draxler presents a comprehensive solo exhibition by Andrea Fraser in Berlin. Fraser (b. 1965, Billings, Montana), a leading figure in institutional critique since the 1980s, is renowned for her work examining the social, economic, and emotional dynamics of art institutions.
Exhibition Highlights
Untitled (Objects): A series of five small child figures crafted from microcrystalline wax. Despite their marble-like surfaces, the soft, unfinished forms serve as an allegory for how art objects are desired and preserved.
Untitled (Audio) (2003/2004): A sound work from Fraser’s controversial Untitled project, positioning viewers within the dynamics of desire, value, and exchange in the art market.
Untitled (Documentation) (2003/2006): Compiles the project’s historical context, press materials, and footage from its initial presentation.
May I Help You? (1991–2025): One of Fraser’s most groundbreaking performances, exploring how art consumption reinforces class and social hierarchies through six distinct social positions. First performed at Art Cologne in 1991, new recordings and archival materials will be on view in Berlin.
Why It Matters
Fraser’s work lays bare the tension between the emotional and market value of art objects. Infused with both humor and sharp critique, her pieces establish her as a keen observer not only of institutions but also of the collector-artist-audience triangle.
