David Apakidze’s “The Knight at the Crossroads”

September 14, 20251 min read

A knight stands at a crossroads: which path will they choose, where will they belong?

Georgian artist David Apakidze (*1998) reimagines this archetype through the lens of a queer migrant figure in his new installation at KVOST.

In classic narratives, the crossroads is where a hero’s fate is decided. Yet Apakidze’s knight does not return triumphant; they are in constant motion, rootless, on a fragile journey. Their armor is not made of iron: it’s a motorcycle helmet with a vibrant, yet breakable, stained-glass visor.

The Knight at the Crossroads brings visibility to the experiences of many queer individuals forced to flee their countries due to homophobia and political violence. Indecision, movement, displacement—all are layers in this contemporary, dystopian tale.

Apakidze, a Tbilisi-based visual artist, curator, and co-founder of Fungus Project, blends his academic interest in medieval Orthodox art with today’s queer art. As the recipient of the KVOST Stipendium 2025 and the Claus Michaletz Preis, he emerges as a standout voice at Berlin Art Week.

🔗 Apartment No:26 Note: Apakidze’s knight reminds us that sometimes heroism lies not in reaching a destination but in the courage to keep moving forward.
