Hauser & Wirth Somerset hosts a special exhibition bringing together two visionary artists: Niki de Saint Phalle & Jean Tinguely – Myths & Machines. This marks the first UK exhibition dedicated to both artists and is part of the centennial celebration of Tinguely’s birth. The exhibition runs until February 1, 2026.
The exhibition showcases the over thirty-year visionary artistic collaboration between Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) and Jean Tinguely (1925–1991). Featuring previously unseen works, Saint Phalle’s shooting paintings and monumental sculptures, and Tinguely’s iconic kinetic machines, it highlights their shared rebellious spirit and innovative challenges to traditional art-making.
Key themes and works include Tinguely’s “anti-machines,” Saint Phalle’s Nanas series, and her creations for the film Un Rêve plus long que la nuit. Their mutual influence is evident in collaborative projects like Le Grande Tête and monumental works such as Le Cyclop and the Tarot Garden.
The artists, who married in 1971, intertwined their personal and professional lives. Their legacies are preserved by the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and Museum Tinguely. The exhibition also features Sacred Monsters, a film inspired by their philosophies, and Our Imaginary World, an Education Lab.
