Experience a powerful and poetic physical theatre performance that delves into bipolar disorder, trauma, and the path to healing.
How do you navigate forward when your mind insists on pulling you back?
Through dynamic flashbacks and shifts in time, we journey through Ella’s emotional landscape—moments of exhilaration and boundless creativity intertwined with periods of profound sadness and despair. The narrative oscillates between past and present, where emotions—joy, chaos, grief, and numbness—are expressed through physical movement.
At its essence, this piece transcends the theme of mental illness; it encapsulates the human condition. It’s an exploration of memory, resilience, and the delicate nature of identity. With its immersive visual design, the performance invites the audience to enter Ella’s fragmented mind, experiencing her struggle to reassemble her sense of self.
“Journey Through Shadows” is a one-act physical theatre exploration of bipolar disorder and healing.
About the Team
Developed by a female-led creative collective, “Journey Through Shadows” draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of producer and director Wangjiayu Chu (Stephanie), whose own mental health journey fueled this work. Collaborating with passionate female artists focused on storytelling through movement, this piece immerses the audience in the vivid, sensory world where memories, emotions, and time intertwine.
This ambitious exploration of dance and embodiment asks important questions: Can trauma ultimately lead to healing? What does that internal journey feel like?
