With a beloved story crafted by Dodie Smith and two successful Disney adaptations, there’s a high bar set for “101 Dalmatians: The Musical.” After a successful run at Regent’s Park Theatre, this touring production is now extending its stay at the Eventim Apollo.
However, the Apollo, known for its cavernous space better suited for concerts, poses challenges for theatrical performances. The vast stage, while accommodating creative set designs by David Woodhead, can leave the production feeling somewhat lost.
The show tends to lean towards a pantomime style, lacking subtlety in character portrayal. Although the songs by Douglas Hodge and Jonny McKnight are catchy, they often rush through the lyrics, leading audiences to wish for a more emotional musical moment. While there are poignant moments in Act 2, they arrive a bit too late to make a significant impact.
One standout performance is by Sydnie Christmas as Cruella De Vil; her powerful vocals energize the stage. Her rendition of ‘Fur Fur’ truly steals the show and showcases her talent brilliantly.
In contrast, Aston Merrygold and Jeff Brazier, playing the sidekick brothers Jasper and Casper, are recognizable faces but fall somewhat flat without the necessary comedic timing to elevate their roles. The dog parents, portrayed by Samuel Thomas as Tom and Laura Baldwin as Danielle, shine with warmth, but lack the vocal prowess to compete with Cruella’s powerful presence.
Undoubtedly, the canine characters take center stage, thanks to the impressive puppetry directed by Jimmy Grimes. The cast skillfully manipulates the puppets, bringing Pongo, Perdita, and a host of other dogs—and even a feisty cat—to life. However, the theatre’s layout can make it difficult for kids and adults alike to see the intricate puppetry, as many have to crane their necks or miss the action altogether.
