Get ready for an engaging mix of humor, heart, and the infectious rhythms of Northern Soul music, as Toby Parsons Productions, in collaboration with Park Theatre, unveils the premiere of (God Save My) Northern Soul. Written and performed by the talented Natasha Cottriall, this dark comedy delves into themes of love and loss within the backdrop of a beloved music genre. The show runs at Park Theatre from Tuesday, September 9, to Saturday, September 20, 2025.
(God Save My) Northern Soul follows 19-year-old Nicole, a mixed-race only child from Wigan, who finds herself navigating life with just a college diploma and a job at River Island, while her plans for university remain on hold. But her ordinary routine takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a house, a BMW, and a sandwich shop. As she embarks on this humorous and heartfelt journey into adulthood, Nicole is shaped (and occasionally misled) by her strict Catholic grandmother, her chain-smoking best friend Sally, and the flamboyant Father Smithe. Throughout her adventures, she clings to the remnants of her teenage years while yearning to lose her virginity. The narrative is beautifully complemented by classic Northern Soul tracks, providing an energetic soundtrack to Nicole’s coming-of-age story.
Natasha Cottriall, known for her performances in The Welkin at the National Theatre and appearances in BBC’s Shetland and ITV’s Vera, makes her debut as a playwright with this hour-long production. The play is directed by Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder, Joint Artistic Director of Box of Tricks Theatre Company, recognized for her acclaimed touring productions like Narvik. The set design is by Alex Marker, and the sound design is crafted by Chris James.
This compelling new work is part of Park Theatre’s Make Mine a Double format, which showcases bold writing and emerging talent in the intimate Park90 space. Audiences can also opt to see Vermin, which is featured in a double bill.
Producer Toby Parsons expressed his enthusiasm: “Natasha is a rare talent—a brilliant actress and a captivating storyteller. This production has been a long time in the making, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience this unique and touching tale of love, loss, and Northern Soul.”
