The Coral Reimagines Their 2002 Debut Album with an 8-Bit Twist

July 17, 20252 min read

The Coral has taken a nostalgic turn, re-recording their entire debut album from 2002 in a charming 8-bit video game style – listen to ‘Shadows Fall’ below.

The self-titled debut album featured hits like ‘Dreaming Of You’ and ‘Goodbye’. Now, fans can experience these classics in a completely new light.

Co-founder and bassist Paul Duffy transformed the original tracks into this lo-fi format, with the new album titled The Coral Caves Of Illusion – Debut Album Celebration, set for release on September 5 through AV8 Records – you can pre-order it here.

Duffy utilized the miniBit platform to create the album, inspired by the question, “How can I make it sound like my favorite levels in Sonic or Mickey Mouse’s ‘Castle Of Illusion’?”

Listen to ‘Shadows Fall’ here:

Duffy explained how the project began: “While filming a documentary, James asked Nick Power if anyone could create an 8-bit version of ‘Shadows Fall’ for a scene where we were represented as pixel characters.”

“Nick replied, ‘Duffy’s your man.’ I’ve always loved gaming, so it was a perfect fit. Everyone enjoyed it so much that they suggested I do the entire first album in 8-bit. It’s even featured in the documentary.”

The documentary, Dreaming Of You, directed by James Slater, chronicles the band’s origins and the recording of their debut album. It premiered last month at the Sheffield Doc Fest.

This summer, The Coral has been busy performing at various major shows, including supporting Supergrass in Margate, Blossoms in Derby, Kaiser Chiefs in Leeds, and Elbow in Cardiff and Gloucestershire.

Their latest album of new material, Sea Of Mirrors, marked their 11th release, featuring contributions from Cillian Murphy, John Simm, and former member Bill Ryder-Jones.
