Apple’s icy workplace thriller Severance and HBO’s The Penguin are at the forefront of this year’s Emmy nominations, while the breakout drama Adolescence has also made a remarkable impression.

In its second season, Severance has garnered an impressive 27 nominations, dominating the drama categories. Meanwhile, The Studio, Apple’s new comedy, has set a new record for most nods received by a freshman comedy series with 23 nominations.

Severance is competing for Best Drama Series against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Slow Horses, The White Lotus, and first seasons of Paradise and The Pitt, which secured 13 nominations.

Leading the pack of nominees for Best Drama Actor is Adam Scott from Severance, facing off against Sterling K. Brown from Paradise, Gary Oldman from Slow Horses, Pedro Pascal from The Last of Us, and Noah Wyle from The Pitt. In the Best Drama Actress category, Britt Lower from Severance is pitted against Keri Russell from The Diplomat, Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us, Sharon Horgan from Bad Sisters, and Kathy Bates from Matlock, who at 77, is the oldest nominee ever in this category.

HBO’s The White Lotus also performed well, receiving 23 nominations, including nods for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Walton Goggins, and Jason Isaacs.

For Best Comedy Series, The Studio will compete against Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, and What We Do in the Shadows, along with Netflix’s breakout hit Nobody Wants This.

In the Best Comedy Actor category, Seth Rogen leads alongside Adam Brody for Nobody Wants This, Jeremy Allen White for The Bear, Jason Segel for Shrinking, and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building. The Best Comedy Actress nominee list includes Jean Smart for Hacks, Ayo Edebiri for The Bear, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, Kristen Bell for Nobody Wants This, and Uzo Aduba for The Residence, which was recently canceled by Netflix.

The Penguin received 24 nominations, leading in the Best Limited Series category against Black Mirror, Dying for Sex, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and the highly-discussed Adolescence, which earned 13 nominations.

Adolescence, which portrays the aftermath of a schoolboy’s tragic actions, recently became Netflix’s second-most-watched English-language series of all time. It received recognition for its cast, with nominations for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, Ashley Walters, and newcomer Owen Cooper, who made history as the youngest actor nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.

In this category, Graham competes against Colin Farrell from The Penguin, Jake Gyllenhaal from Presumed Innocent, Brian Tyree Henry from Dope Thief, and Cooper Koch from Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie lead actress nominees include Cate Blanchett for Disclaimer, Meghann Fahy for Sirens, Rashida Jones for Black Mirror, Michelle Williams for Dying for Sex, and Cristin Milioti for The Penguin.

Noteworthy nominations include Beyoncé for her Netflix halftime show Beyoncé Bowl, directors Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard for their roles in The Studio, and Harrison Ford, who received his first Emmy nomination for Shrinking.

Earlier in the day, the nominees for talk series and reality competition were unveiled, with Late Night With Seth Meyers and The Voice receiving notable snubs.

Other surprising omissions were Renée Zellweger for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Keira Knightley for Black Doves, and Your Friends and Neighbours, which only received recognition in the title theme music category.

Cris Abrego, chair of the television academy, noted that this year saw a record number of voting members.

Last year, Shōgun, Hacks, The Bear, and Baby Reindeer had standout wins.

The 2025 Emmy Awards are set for September 14, with comedian Nate Bargatze as the host.
