The Legendary Reforming Efforts of Mick Fleetwood

Neighbor, would you like me to read the news to you?

Mick Fleetwood is undoubtedly one of the most insightful figures when it comes to the dynamics of keeping a rock band intact. While Fleetwood Mac has gone through numerous breakups, Mick has continuously served as the unwavering backbone of the band. Alongside John McVie, he has established one of rock and roll’s most notable rhythm sections. Yet, there have been times when he had to persuade others to reconnect with the essence of rock music.

However, as the saga of rock and roll has shown us, persuasion doesn’t always yield results. Lindsey Buckingham was set on leaving the band before they could present Tango in the Night, and despite attempts to accommodate him, tensions escalated, culminating in a physical confrontation between him and Stevie Nicks during a band meeting.

While Fleetwood didn’t always succeed in aligning everyone’s vision, he remained a respected figure whom everyone in the band listened to. Having been part of the original lineup with Peter Green in the late ’60s, Fleetwood’s wisdom in the music industry earned him a reputation as the band’s sage, even amidst differing opinions.

This extends beyond just Fleetwood Mac’s members. Mick understood that many artists hadn’t had the chance to say their farewells. The reunion during The Dance offered a renewed life to the original lineup in the ’90s, but Mick felt a tinge of sadness when he observed Jimmy Page and Robert Plant performing together without John Paul Jones.

To Mick, Zeppelin was among the greatest rock bands ever. When he spoke to Page, he passionately advocated for a reunion, recalling in a 2007 interview, “When we played in London last year, he came to see us. I expressed how many people wanted to see Led Zeppelin back together.” Despite Page’s hesitations, Mick encouraged him, saying, “If we can do it, you can!” While he wouldn’t claim to be the sole reason for Zeppelin’s eventual reunion, he acknowledged their successful tribute performance as a significant moment.

If Led Zeppelin were to make a comeback, it had to be done right, considering they hadn’t performed together in a long time. But when fans experienced Celebration Day, it felt as though time hadn’t touched them; Robert Plant’s voice and Jimmy Page’s genius remained as captivating as ever.

Though the absence of John Bonham was palpable, his son Jason filled in brilliantly, allowing fans to experience something close to a true Zeppelin reunion. Although a full tour didn’t follow, those lucky enough to witness the band’s momentous return felt content, cherishing the experience rather than yearning for more.

While Mick Fleetwood may not have singlehandedly orchestrated Zeppelin’s reunion, the opportunity for them to prove their enduring legacy was all that mattered. The spirit of Bonham was present, and classic tracks like “Rock and Roll” brought pure joy to fans who reminisce about their legendary performances.
