Starting out by busking on the streets of Sydney and today transforming into one of Australia’s most exciting modern psychedelic rock quartets, The Lazy Eyes pour that familiar tension between nostalgia and acceptance into captivating notes with their new single “The One Who Got Away”.
From High School Corridors to Their Own Festivals: Founded by Harvey Karate, Itay Shachar, and Noah Martin at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, later completed with the addition of bassist Leon Karagic, this organic band gained incredible momentum after their 2020 and 2021 EPs and their debut album SongBook. Not only have they organised sold-out tours, but they have also brought their own mini-festival, Lazyfest, to life. Their shape-shifting sound, which blends 60s psychedelic textures with sharp modern instincts, is now on the radar of giants like BBC 6 Music, NME, and KCRW.
“The One Who Got Away”: The song is a perfect example of the band’s expansive and emotionally charged psychedelic style. Balancing dreamlike introspection with layered instrumentation, the track starts with laid-back, thoughtful lyrics and climbs towards a fully immersive, gradually swelling crescendo that completely draws the listener in.
Fusion of Vintage and Contemporary: The song presents the bittersweet tension between nostalgia and acceptance within a framework of lush guitars and fluid transitions that feel both vintage and strikingly contemporary. The Lazy Eyes’ signature dynamic mood shifts are also at play here; they pull you through different emotions and finally bring you back down to earth with emotional clarity.
Note from Apartment No:26:
On the famous “Australian Psych-Rock” highway opened by Tame Impala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, they are building their own lane very solidly with the organic chemistry they’ve had since high school. The fluid and “lush” texture of the guitars in the song instantly brings to mind the colourful and hazy filters of the 60s while listening. Rather than mourning those who slipped away, “The One Who Got Away” embraces the sweet-bitter residue left by those memories with musical acceptance.
