In the backstreets of Soho, when you step into the legendary French House—where time seems to have frozen in the 1950s—there is an unwritten but ironclad rule: you can never order a pint (the large, roughly half-litre glass). You will be politely but firmly served only in half-pint measures. But every rule has its exception, and that day is about to knock on the door!
Today is 12 March 2026—which means it’s the perfect time to set our calendars to 1 April for one of London’s most delightfully confused yet entertaining traditions: Pints Day.
Why Only Half Pints?
This iconic pub on Dean Street still carries the raffish spirit of the days when Dylan Thomas drunkenly lost the manuscript of Under Milk Wood. The legends about why the French House serves only half pints are many:
Whatever the reason, asking for a pint at the French House is usually seen as a clear sign of being a novice. Except, of course, on 1 April.
Not an April Fool’s Joke—A Charity Race
Pints Day has been a tradition since around the year 2000. On that day, dusty antique pint glasses are brought up from the depths of the cellar, carefully washed, and—only for those hours—the beer flow doubles.
What makes the day special is not just the large glasses, but the famous faces behind the bar:
Important detail: this is actually a fundraising event. Between 14:00 and 16:00, selected pint glasses are auctioned off in aid of Soho Parish School. It’s not uncommon for a glass to fetch over £100 on Pints Day; one filled by actor Ken Stott reportedly sold for £240!
Remember: if you’re there on 1 April, get there early if you want to grab one of those antique glasses—by evening they’ll be back in the cellar for another year. There’s no better excuse to witness Soho’s gloriously hungover history.
Venue: The French House, 49 Dean Street, Soho, London
