Few bands are as consistently impressive as Wolf Alice. Active since 2010, they’ve successfully combined mainstream appeal with that beloved indie rock vibe that keeps them everyone’s favorite secret.
But this secret is becoming less exclusive. They’re set to perform at one of London’s largest venues, the O2 Arena, next week. I had the privilege of catching them early during their European tour and got a sneak peek of what’s in store for their hometown fans.
In stark contrast to the 20,000-capacity O2, the intimate Columbiahalle in Berlin holds about 2,500, offering incredible views and close proximity to the stage.
The show kicks off powerfully with their new track “Thorns.” As Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis, and Joel Amey take their positions, lead singer Ellie Rowsell arrives on stage with an eye-catching presence that electrifies the audience.
From there, the band dives straight into the music, featuring a rapid-fire setlist that spans over 20 songs across four albums, with a focus on their latest release, The Clearing.
We get to hear Rowsell’s bold “Bloom Baby Bloom,” followed by Joel Amey’s groove-infused “White Horses”—though his vocals struggle to stand out against his drumming. Classic track “Formidable Cool” then gets the crowd moving.
One of Wolf Alice’s standout qualities is their ability to seamlessly shift from introspective melodies to high-energy anthems, something that’s on full display throughout the evening.
For example, “Leaning Against The Wall” showcases their softer side, with Rowsell serenading the audience under a pink-lit stage. The crowd’s energy surges as they transition to “Bros,” followed by a thrilling climax toward the end of the show.
As things reach a fever pitch, “You’re A Germ” features Rowsell at her most powerful, pouring her soul into the lyrics like there’s no tomorrow. Following that, the explosive trio of “Yuk Foo,” “Play The Greatest Hits,” and “Silk” leaves the audience buzzing.
They save one of their best tracks for last. “Don’t Delete The Kisses,” their breakthrough single, remains strikingly potent in a live setting. It’s certain to leave fans electrified, especially in a large venue like the O2. If this performance is any indication, it’s going to be a night to remember.
