Witness The Who Deliver a Historic Live Performance of ‘Going Mobile’

August 19, 20253 min read

The Who made headlines by performing their 1971 classic, “Going Mobile,” live for the very first time. Check out the footage of this significant moment below.

Last week, on August 16, the band kicked off their farewell tour, “The Song Is Over,” at the Amerant Bank Arena in Florida. To the delight of the crowd, nine songs into their set, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and the rest of the band surprised everyone by playing this hidden gem from “Who’s Next”—a performance fans have anticipated since its release over fifty years ago.

For this special rendition, Simon Townshend, Pete’s younger brother, took the lead vocals, while Daltrey contributed on the harmonica. Watch the fan-captured clips of this memorable moment below.

Reflecting on why they chose to tour the U.S. for their farewell, Daltrey shared in May: “The warmth of American audiences has always inspired me, echoing the feelings I had when I first heard rock records on the radio. There’s a sense of musical freedom! Rock embodying that spirit of generational rebellion—America has always been a special place for me.”

He continued, “The cultural differences had a profound influence; this is the land of possibilities. Ending this significant chapter of my life with The Who is not easy. I am grateful for your support and look forward to seeing everyone one last time.”

Earlier this month, Daltrey expressed his concerns about completing the tour, emphasizing how “gruelling” live shows can be. He shared his hopes of avoiding voice issues and the challenges stemming from his past battle with meningitis.

“It caused considerable damage. It disrupts my internal temperature regulation, so whenever I sing in temperatures above 75 degrees, I’m drenched in sweat, which depletes my body salts,” he explained. “There’s a real risk of getting seriously ill, and I have to admit, I’m anxious about making it through the entire tour.”

The Who’s longtime drummer, Zak Starkey—son of Beatles legend Ringo Starr—will not join the band for their farewell shows, marking a recent shift confirmed by Pete Townshend, who stated, “The time has come for a change.”

Scott Devours has since stepped in as the new drummer for the farewell tour. Previously part of Daltrey’s solo band, he described the responsibility of taking on the role as “enormous” and expressed understanding for fans feeling disappointed by Starkey’s exit.
