Huxley-Parlour is presenting American artist William Wegman’s exhibition “Looking Right and Left”, consisting of eight large-scale photographs, at its Wiltshire gallery from 5 May to 3 June 2026. Wegman, who has played a pioneering role in the development of conceptual photography since the 1970s, consistently treats the image as both a conceptual inquiry and a formal field of experimentation. Alongside this presentation in Wiltshire, the gallery is also organising a second exhibition at its London Swallow Street space titled “William Wegman: Video Works 1970-77”, which focuses on the artist’s early video works.

Particularly known in the art world for his long-standing collaboration with Weimaraner dogs that began with Man Ray, Wegman examines systems of meaning, the concept of authorship and performance through this partnership. Working across different media such as photography, video, painting and drawing, the artist positions humour in his photographs as a structural and analytical tool. Through carefully constructed compositions, he explores the concepts of symmetry, repetition and gesture. His works move freely between deadpan expression and surrealism.

Wegman’s artistic practice engages with a broad spectrum of visual traditions ranging from fashion photography to art history. Through the use of costumes, props and sets, the artist continuously establishes a connection with modernist traditions, reframing their formal concerns through the medium of photography. His works highlight the tension between conceptual rigour and apparent simplicity, while also erasing the boundaries between the ordinary and the constructed.

The exhibition, taking place at Huxley-Parlour’s Wiltshire gallery in Marlborough, Mildenhall, can be visited from Monday to Wednesday between 10:00 and 15:00. Free admission, the exhibition offers the opportunity to experience Wegman’s central role in the history of conceptual photography and his experimental approach to visual language through large-scale works.
