The Show Robin Williams Couldn’t Resist: The Day He Crashed the Set

June 27, 20252 min read

Any major production typically has strict security protocols in place to keep its set safe from intruders. However, exceptions are often made for a certain superstar—especially when that star is Robin Williams visiting one of his favorite TV shows.

With his quick wit and boundless creativity, Williams was known for being unpredictable on set. So, it’s no surprise that no one could keep him from checking out the behind-the-scenes of a series he eagerly anticipated each week.

After all, when you’re Robin Williams, even the most vigilant security team is unlikely to force you to leave if you decide to drop by a project unannounced.

One of the shows that caught his attention was The X-Files, created by David Duchovny. Despite Duchovny’s directorial debut in 2004, House of D, not exactly standing out in cinematic history, Williams had fond memories of their first encounter a decade earlier. He recounted meeting Duchovny while he was filming Jumanji in Vancouver, where Duchovny was busy working on The X-Files.

“I wandered down this main street and said, ‘Can I meet…?’ And they said, ‘Yeah’,” Williams shared. He vividly remembered how Duchovny, not believing it was really him, was amused when he approached and said, “Hi, Mr. Duchovny. Hi, Fox! You’re really groovy. Where’s Mulder?” Their paths crossed a few more times at fundraisers and events over the years.

Williams was genuine in his admiration for The X-Files, especially its early seasons, which he praised for their chilling horror episodes and themes of alien possession.

While many perks come with being a movie star, crashing the set of your favorite TV show is definitely one of the highlights. Fortunately for Williams, he was able to seize the opportunity while filming in the same city, allowing him to mingle with Mulder, Scully, and the show’s intriguing storylines up close.
