Music is not just a sound wave; it can also be the language of a spiritual quest. The collective Jaubi, blending classical North Indian music with the freedom of modal jazz and the energy of hip-hop, takes the stage at Salon İKSV as one of the standout guests of the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival. The group’s name itself carries a philosophy, derived from an Urdu word meaning “whatever/whoever.”
Jaubi first emerged on the global music scene in 2016 with their rendition of Time: The Donut of the Heart, a tribute to the legendary J Dilla. In 2019, they collaborated with leading UK jazz figure Tenderlonious and Polish musician Marek “Latarnik” Pędziwiatr in Lahore, Pakistan, for improvisational recordings. The result, Nafs at Peace, made it onto The Guardian’s “Top 10 Global Albums” list in 2021.
Guided by the principle of creating music that sounds good and feels good, Jaubi explores the resonance of inner quests and mysticism in jazz. Their 2023 album, A Sound Heart, marks the beginning of a new era for the group, both sonically and spiritually.
This concert is more than a musical experience; it is living proof of how different cultures and genres can converge to create a new language.
