Liminal Space Theatre presents a stage adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved classic, The Little Prince, directed by Angharad Ormond, with an adaptation by Paul Graves and Ormond.

The talented cast enchanted the audience with their charismatic performances, skillfully exploring deep themes that resonated even with my preschool-aged children. The storyline’s complexities faded into the background as they became engrossed in the vibrant characters, showcasing the strong connection between performers and viewers.

Set in an intimate, circular venue where every seat offers an unobstructed view, the theatre’s size enhances the experience. The cast utilized a beautiful mix of mime, dance, and puppetry to animate every corner of the space. A standout moment was a breathtaking solo performance by a rose—beloved by the Little Prince—sung in a captivating chanteuse style.

Throughout the performance, live drawings on a chalkboard mirrored the Pilot’s notes, marking locations within the tale. Projected animations and clever lighting transformed fluttering butterflies into dazzling blue stars and creatively depicted distant planets.

I attended with my four-year-old twins, one of whom has autism. I was initially concerned about his ability to sit still, especially given his previous cinema experience of just 35 minutes. To my delight, he laughed, clapped, and radiated joy throughout the entire 70-minute show. The “chilled performance” format of this matinee allowed parents like me to relax and immerse ourselves in the experience. I often felt transported back to my own childhood, despite never having read the book. The show’s brisk pacing and episodic structure were perfectly designed to capture and maintain young attention spans.

On our way home, both children clutched their Little Prince flyers, excitedly sharing their favorite moments from the show. Reflecting on their experiences, one child exclaimed, “It was so good that I felt like my head was really high up, like it went up into the sky!” The other said, “When the guy landed, I felt like I was falling in an airplane with the door open! I landed!”

In a world where we often juggle numerous responsibilities, The Little Prince offers a delightful family outing that sparks imagination and joy—a magical reminder of the beauty of storytelling.
