The Heart of Jazz in London: Tradition and New Discoveries at the EFG London Jazz Festival

The EFG London Jazz Festival once again proves how inclusive and open to evolution the genre of jazz truly is. This year’s program peaks with genre-crossing collaborations, from Adekunle Gold’s unexpected partnership with the Guildhall Session Orchestra to Nubya Garcia’s electronic-jazz fusion.

Headliners and Cultural Intersections

The festival stage welcomes both established masters and fresh voices:

• Dee Dee Bridgewater Quartet: Delivering a legendary jazz performance with the “We Exist!” concert.
• Makaya McCraven: One of the most innovative drummers in contemporary jazz.
• Nubya Garcia: A pioneer of UK jazz, sharing the stage with Jamz Supernova.
• Tanita Tikaram: Promising a melancholic and lyrical evening alongside Luke Sital Singh and Zosia Jagodzinska.
• Mulatu Astatke: The living legend of Ethiopian jazz (Ethio-Jazz).
• Hiromi: The Japanese pianist’s solo performance followed by a Q&A.
• Kurt Elling and The Yellowjackets: Presenting a special project celebrating Weather Report.
• Adrian Younge: Proving jazz’s immortality with the “Jazz is Dead” project.
• İlhan Erşahin’s Istanbul Sessions: One of the most dynamic representatives of Turkish jazz fusion.

20 Years of Legacy and Emerging Talent

This year’s festival also marks the 20th anniversary of the Take Five talent-development program. Alumni such as Camilla George and Shabaka hold a prominent place with panels discussing the evolution of UK jazz and live performances. While continuing to nurture new talent, the festival spotlights Take Five Alumni artists including Marysia Osu, Rory Green, Matt Carmichael, and Gloria Yehilevsky.

Free Events and Philosophical Conversations

Far more than just concerts, the program draws attention with free events open to everyone:

• The Jazz Social: A dedicated gathering space on Ropemaker St near the Barbican, hosting intimate live performances, quizzes, and broadcasts.
• Talks and Workshops: Conversations with Ammar Kalia, Emma Warren, and André Marmot; presentations on Blue Note Records history; and youth-oriented workshops—all offered free of charge.

This year’s EFG London Jazz Festival combines celebration of music with storytelling and an educational journey. London’s spirit will pulse to the rhythm of jazz.
