Active in St. Petersburg from 1996 to 2002, the performance collective The Brotherhood of New Blockheads staged over 100 absurd, poetic, and humorous performances in just five years. Offering a critical perspective on the dissolution of the Soviet Union and remaining largely unknown in the West for years, the group now engages German audiences for the first time.
The exhibition at Berlin’s BQ Gallery provides an opportunity to rediscover The Brotherhood of New Blockheads’ seemingly nonsensical yet reflective actions, which mirror the political and social transformations of their era. Featuring iconic performances like Teach Yourself to See, the exhibition is open to the public for free until June 28, 2025.
