Realfake Theatre’s acclaimed dark comedy, “English Kings Killing Foreigners,” is set to move to the Soho Theatre for a five-week run this autumn, from September 16 to October 18, 2025. This production, praised for its clever humor and energetic approach, offers a witty examination of English cultural identity and the often controversial legacy of Shakespeare.
Written and performed by the talented duo Nina Bowers and Philip Arditti, the play explores the relevance of Shakespeare in today’s society. Drawing from their own experiences in various productions of Henry V, including performances at Shakespeare’s Globe, Bowers and Arditti describe “English Kings Killing Foreigners” as a “silly show about serious issues.”
The play addresses pressing themes of nationalism and the complexities of identity, particularly concerning the casting of Global Majority actors in traditional Shakespearean roles. It confronts the challenges faced by artists navigating a “post-woke cultural landscape,” highlighted by the backlash against actors like Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who experienced racial abuse after portraying Juliet.
At its heart, the production unfolds as a workplace comedy, following Nina and Philip—two “outsider” actors—cast in a highly anticipated rendition of Henry V. Their camaraderie over skepticism towards theatrical norms is put to the test when Nina unexpectedly lands the title role. Audiences will see them rehearse and perform scenes from Henry V, revealing the tension between their professional ambitions and personal struggles, echoing the historical violence of Agincourt with the subtle aggressions of the rehearsal environment.
This vibrant, engaging, and thought-provoking performance is a must-see for anyone looking for theatre that entertains while challenging the status quo.
