The Pleasance Theatre Trust has solidified its status as a leading force in new comedy by winning both top prizes at the 2025 Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Comedians Sam Nicoresti and Ayoade Bamgboye, key figures in Pleasance’s renowned lineup, were honored for their remarkable performances at the festival.
Sam Nicoresti’s show, Baby Doomer, took home The Taffner Family Best Comedy Show award. This highly anticipated follow-up to his previous work presents a witty and touching narrative about a journey of self-exploration. Nicoresti, a winner of the LSQ Theatre New Comedian award, guides the audience from a comedy night at a care home to the standing stones of Cornwall, all while in pursuit of the ideal skirt suit.
On the other hand, Ayoade Bamgboye was recognized as The DLT Entertainment Best Newcomer for her debut performance, Swings and Roundabouts. The Nigerian stand-up comedian draws on her experiences of relocating to the UK, using her sharp wit and undeniable confidence to tackle profound questions about identity. Her show offers a moving and often humorous perspective on finding her place in a country where she feels “too British to stop apologizing and too Nigerian to shout.”
Anthony Alderson, Director of the Pleasance Theatre Trust, expressed his joy over the dual victory, stating, “I am thrilled that Ayoade Bamgboye and Sam Nicoresti have both won Edinburgh Comedy Awards this year. Their material is exceptional, and they truly deserve all the accolades.”
Ryan Taylor, Head of Comedy, echoed this enthusiasm, noting that both winners exemplify the brilliance of the comedy industry and deserve every success. Since its inception in 1981, the prestigious awards have celebrated emerging talent, and this year’s recipients are no exception. Tickets for their acclaimed shows are available on the Pleasance website.
