Orphan – Filmekimi 2025

October 6, 20251 min read

Known for his Oscar-winning Son of Saul and Sunset, László Nemes returns after a six-year hiatus, once again intertwining history with personal stories. Orphan (Árva), set in Budapest in 1957 following the failed Hungarian uprising, portrays a nation healing from the wounds of war and rebellion through the eyes of a young boy.

Andor, a Jewish child raised on his mother’s tales of his father’s heroism, is shaken when a stranger knocks on the door claiming to be his “real father.” This story, told through the child’s perspective, is not just a quest for identity but also a mirror to a shattered nation’s memory. Drawing from his own family history, Nemes shoots on 35mm film, capturing the era’s dark atmosphere with stunning visuals. Premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival, Orphan also stands out as Hungary’s Oscar candidate.
