The famous “smoking cat” illustrations that frequently appear on social media are finally coming to life. Nyan Nyan Factory’s beloved manga Chainsmoker Cat (known in Japanese as YaniNeko) has officially been greenlit for an anime adaptation. If you think your cat has weird habits, you clearly haven’t met Yani yet. This story follows the tragicomic daily life of a heavy-smoking cat girl who can never quite get her life together.
Yani is a cat girl who can’t pay her rent, can’t hold down a job, and gives up on quitting smoking within seconds of every attempt. Although her friends and little sister try to help her, Yani resorts to creative — and often downright disgusting — methods to extinguish her burning cigarette butts. Is there any hope for her? We’ll find out together.
Scheduled to premiere in July 2026, this highly anticipated production boasts an impressive creative team. The lead character Yani will be voiced by Yuko Natsuyoshi, best known for her standout performance in The Misfit of Demon King Academy. Taku Kimura, who gained recognition for his work on Star Wars: Visions, takes the director’s chair, while animation production is handled by Bibury Animation Studios. The atmospheric soundtrack is composed by the veteran Keiichi Suzuki, familiar to fans from Saint Young Men.
A Visual Feast or Just a Cloud of Smoke?
The first released teaser image and trailer confirm that the chaotic, laid-back vibe of the original manga has been faithfully preserved. Takashi Aoshima, known for his work on The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You, is in charge of the series composition. We’re in for a show that will make us laugh and go “No way, that’s too much” in equal measure.
Apartment No:26 Note
Those who have read the manga — published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment — know that this series isn’t just about a cat. It’s an absurdly honest expression of the “lost” feeling that modern life brings.
Get ready — Yani is about to light up screens worldwide in July 2026.
